3-DAY ITINERARY
DAY 1
Discover Nagano Tranquility
Start your day marvelling at nature at Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park, where Japan’s famous red-faced snow monkeys live freely in their natural habitat. In winter, even more monkeys gather to bath in the steaming hot springs to keep warm – a cute sight you’ll want to capture for your Instagram feed!
You can relax, just like the monkeys do, by visiting a nearby onsen (or using one at your resort). Many bathhouses keep their traditional wooden architecture, giving you an enchanting window into the architecture of old Japan.

Next, head to Zenkoji Temple in Nagano, one of Japan’s oldest temples - dating back to the 7th century. Inside, you will find the famous Nade-botoke, “the Patting Buddha,” where you can rub the statue for good health and blessings. You can also join a meditation session or a tea ceremony nearby.
Finish the day with a sake tasting. Nagano is Japan’s top sake region and home to more than 80 local breweries! Discover the secrets of sake-making and savour the rich flavour that will warm you from the inside out.
While you are there, don’t miss the chance to enjoy Nagano’s famous soba noodles and, of course, some fresh sushi!

DAY 2
A Walk into the Past
Step back to the samurai era at Matsumoto Castle, one of Japan’s oldest surviving castles with its original wooden keep. Its striking black exterior earned it the nickname “Crow Castle” and the five-tiered tower was built for defense with platforms once used by archers and samurai. Explore every corner and immerse yourself in Japan’s Edo period!
Head to Narai-juku, a beautifully preserved old Japanese town. Wander along streets lined with houses from the 1800s, and peek inside the Nakamura residence to see how merchants once lived. Stop by the Kamidonya Shiryokan Museum to uncover the town’s rich history.

Don’t miss the old notice board. This is no ordinary sign - it once displayed shogunate decrees! It's incredible how such a simple structure still stands and serves as a connection to the past.
Mochi rice cakes

Round off your visit with a taste of local treats like mochi rice cakes. If you’re lucky, you might catch the thrilling mochi-pounding performance, where mochi masters hammer steamed rice with giant mallets in perfect harmony.
DAY 3
The Artistic Soul of Obuse
Spend your final day in Obuse, a historic town celebrated for its artistic spirit. It is famously associated with Katsushika Hokusai, one of Japan’s most beloved ukiyo-e masters. Visit the Hokusai Museum and marvel at his masterpieces such as The Great Wave off Kanagawa, the Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji, and Dragon and Phoenix painting for the Higashimachi Festival boat.

Then, recharge yourself with a delicate lunch of nasi goreng at a nearby restaurant and drink in the views of rice fields, a carpet of green extending to the horizon.
